How to Protect Yourself
Helpful Tips
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Stay in well-lit areas.
- Do not carry important documents with you. Always carry a photocopy of your DS 2019 Form
- Never give out your passport to anyone.
- Put your money in the bank.
- Do not carry large amounts of cash.
- Use reflective gear, a bike helmet, and headlights when riding a bike at night.
- Lock up your bike.
- Use sunscreen to prevent serious sunburn.
- Do not go into the lake, river, or pool, if you don't know how to swim.
- Beware of the Wisconsin River's current.
- Do not hitchhike, especially if you get a ride offered by a stranger.
- Ask a police officer for help, if you are ever in an uncomfortable or unsafe situation.
- Do not enter I-90/94 Interstate system on foot or while riding a bike.
- Watch the Police Bike/Pedestrian Safety video and obey the rules/laws listed.
- Always go out in a group.
- Always keep an eye on your drink when you go out.
- Never accept an open drink from a stranger.
- Never drink something that looks or smells strange.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- If someone is following you, get to a well-lit area and call 911.
- If someone offers to purchase your social security number, call the police. Provide the police with a description of the person(s) and their vehicle including the license plate number.
- If someone tries to tell you they can get you a high-paying job somewhere else be very cautious. Even if people are from your home country, or know your family, many of their promises are false. This can be a very dangerous situation. Please notify your manager, landlord, or the police immediately.
Bike Safety
- Obey all traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings.
- Do not ride against the direction of traffic.
- Ride on the far right-hand side of the road.
- Use lights and reflectors when riding at night.
- Pay close attention to pedestrians.
- Be aware of auto drivers' rights to turn right on a red light.
- Use bike lanes where available.
